before christmas

this is how the table looked and looks like on quite many evenings.
we were just discussing this with Y - that he thinks we should try and become more active, to teach V the happiness of active outdoors more. instead of just... i don't the word for this... well, it includes crayons, paints, glue, scissors, papers. as for me, i'm very happy to be "creating" whatever, i'm happy even if i make food, even if i just do the dishes, if draw a little line somewhere. and happy for any creation of V's.
it is the dark season and it takes a lot of effort to get out. the light time of the day is short, even though we're past the worst and heading for light now. i think it's good to always find things to do at home. i'm such a bad housekeeper that there definitely is always some house chores undone, but more importantly, it is good to learn how to entertain yourself on gray, dark and rainy days. it can also lead to sending some of those cards or drawings to friends. and to planning a walking trip for tomorrow.

the brown doll being wrapped. i was happy making her too. sewing machine broken, sewing only by hand. nice and meditative. she came with a pillow like this and with 6 little packages (clothes).
so far she's only called brown doll.
(by the way, the old doll, Telda, took her pillow and her gray cardigan. i made a new red one, as was the order. there are a lot of colour demands these days.)

Tyynyä rutistava ruskea nukke on ihan uskomattoman upea. Voi että.

Meillä on porukassa selvä enemmistö niitä, jotka eivät tykkää oleskella ulkona. S on varmaan ainoa joka nauttii ulkoilusta.

Harmaus vetää mut aika lötköksi. Sisällä tai ulkona.

that doll and the pillow and the garments for her are heartbreakingly beautiful, it is such a deep joy to make something for them, isn`t it?
and i totally agree with cultivating indoor and making-activities, it is such an advantage for the children (and us) being happy with that basic things.
L used to try to discuss that with me as well, apparently we convinced him because he stopped.

You speak from my hear, Hanna. Utterly! I call it crafting or pottering and it if the little things can make one happy then that satisfaction is the energy within.

Samoja ajatuksia.

hello.
this subject would need a lot more writing and i'm lacking english words. what he would like is balance.
i think the problem right now is the season, but maybe i'm not willing to admit that we both are too passive. i never considered myself an outdoors person, but i'm happy to find myself quite active in the inside activities. but being inside can also be not really doing or starting anything. and that is frustrating.

Hello Hanna,

Your English is perfect! And yes, what a topic. Anyway, your 'problem' seems very familiar. It does have to do with the season and also with the kind of person one is.

The outdoor world is full of possibilities as far as starting something is concerned and at the same time it can be threatening to the balance that is achieved by focusing on the indoor things.

Maybe the indoors is nothing but our very near surroundings, the nest, the outdoors is the 'world' as such.

I, too, spend more time in my little world and I can go along with you fully. I have tried times of exploring things 'outside' and that can be frustrating, too.

There is a lot of negativity and consumerism going on apart from the good things.

But nature! Hey nature is the one thing worth going out for every single time, isn't it!

PS. Is it Hanna or Hannna?

hannna kirjoitti...

oh Jo, those are the words used in this discussion;
home life and the World. and this home now is more of a nest than any home before.
somehow it feels like now that we're parents, we should be offering this kid more. but it's difficult to try and raise her to be a little bit more outdoors type when i myself am not.

what is outside our door here, where we now live,
is Nature. getting out of the house we get to the nature directly, so managing to get out always means quite high quality outing.

then there is that one more outside; social life and happenings. participating in all that takes more effort than before when we were in the middle of Helsinki.

Kaela kirjoitti...

ooo, i can relate to this, in part-- i constantly struggle with reconciling the fact that i love "nature" and green life and forests, and the particular magical feeling that wild places give me, without which i don't feel whole...with the fact that i'm not really an "outdoors" kind of person, in the traditional sense. i don't like hiking (picnicking is much nicer), i don't play sports, and even camping makes me uncomfortable oftentimes. sigh. but i think living in a place with forests and respecting wildlife and trees and plants is enough...a little can go a long way.

also, thinking about your situation, it's really hard to do a lot of outdoors kind of stuff with a 4-year-old! playing in the woods is nice and easy, but camping/hiking can be difficult until she's a little older and can keep up...especially in the cold winter.

the doll is so pretty, too...it makes me want to make dolls. i love her dress. she seems a little bit nautical. :)

Happy New Year! (It's still 2008 here!)

It is so nice to read what you both say, Hannna and Kaela.

Hannna, I think that really is the point, the two outdoors. The social side will be different of course to living in Helsinki (I love the lake and the cafés there and Suomenlinna).

We live in a town that has 20.000 people, but basically it is a conglomeration of districts and belongs to a larger place that has grown in the same way.

So the feeling one gets moving around in Helsinki, the energy, the new ideas in the air (very similar to Berlin I found, which I love) just cannot be found here even if it is relativitly large.

Nowhere in the 'country' / 'or province'. Do you miss it a lot?

Anyway, I have been thinking. Soon, we will be in your situation, wanting to teach respect and love of nature, and we want to make things, be creative by using bits of nature in the cold months. In summer I have seen kids who can spend hours (in the woods) in one spot and play. I think it is important to try to keep out passive occupations for as long as one can. Are there any kids nearby? Gosh I am rambling on, it is such a topic!

Kaela and Hannna, that is exactly how I feel, love nature, green, the woods we live in (even if it is the citiy woods but large enough), but I too am not into camping, but I do love to hike (go on long walks but only do so on holiday). You are very right, respect is enough (for nature itself).

Oh lovely, and sorry about the long comment!

Jo

hannna kirjoitti...

long comments are the best!
i think i still have to get back to this, a bit later - now it is sunny and we should decide what we do today, the whole family. but it's -15° outside, hasn't been this cold yet!
thank you for writing!

hannna kirjoitti...

so Jo, you've been to Helsinki!
i think Hki is small, mixture of wonderful and boring.
if i ever was going to have money i'd buy a flat in Töölö, or in wood house areas, but i will never have that much money and i wouldn't like to have a loan for 40 years. and i'm not interested in living in the suburbs. i have no idea if this life here is the right one for me, but we'll see. i miss but wouldn't go back to where we were. and i enjoy my training in becoming less materialistic. it's easier when i'm far from shops.
(it's relatively new that there is stuff to want in Hki)

important thing was this:
my mum is very much a nature person and she and my aunt used to take me along to bird watching trips. i guess i always thought is was bit uncool. oh how i wish now that i knew all the birds! my mum is also a picnic person, it was never very serious or anything.

and one more thing: this subject is here now because of the bad weather and darkness. as a mother (and father) we're just thinking, being a bit down because of the season but not wanting to make the kid think that.

Anonyymi kirjoitti...

I would go along with you on all points, really! And the state of the weather literally forces these questions with it being all the more difficult to avoid the kid getting dragged in (who I assume is quite happy with it all!)

So many things (as in objects etc) really aren't necessary to own...

Your Mum really tried and it does seem successfully in the end! I mean, in that you have a sense for nature, I feel.

How lovely to have this honest normal conversation!

Sending you many regards, Jo
