i am happy.
snow! photos from the fresh morning, Thursday, but the snow is still here. it sounds so different outside. and there's light and glitter. i like cold too. today we had a walk with the sledge and a walk to the forest to see footprints, and there was a lot of them! quite a busy forest behind us. it is a new forest now. cats are amazed and mostly sleeping inside.
i'm happy about some other things too: my translations got good feedback, they're the first ones to that publisher. something else too.
first snow of course requires snow lanterns.

hi! i've never commented before, but i've been reading for awhile and trying to get over shyness to say hello–– the snow lantern seems like a good sign to do so. :)
it reminds me of the part in 'moominland midwinter' (my favorite moomin book) when too-ticky builds a snow lantern in the woods, and moomintroll sees it and meets her. (such a good part of that book!)
i can't wait until we get our first real snow of the year here in n.y. and i can go out in the garden and make one~ so exciting.
anyway, i love reading your blog-- it's delightful, funny, sensitive, and beautiful. i'm so glad it exists!

yes! konnichiwa is me, and my dear friend d.v. (...and some synthesizers...and sometimes an accordion...and a computer...)

i can't decide whether i like the cold, too... sometimes it is very invigorating and exciting. especially when the sky is bright blue and there's new clean snow making everything mysterious. other times it's brutal.
but yes...the different kinds of winter people. a very curious bunch. (especially the dweller under the kitchen sink.) :)

Kaela, who is dwelling under your sink? new york - is it a rat? many of our friends started to have mice inside as it got colder, but not us: we have these 2 predators, former city-cats.
my final opinion on cold: i like cold outside, but not inside. cold comes often together with the clear blue skies that's why it is so wonderful, invigorating as you said.

I'm a translator too. From English and French to Portuguese. I live in the Algarve (south of Portugal). Here we never, ever have snow. I can say that when is 5degrees is already too cold for me. I like nordic countries, i don't know why because i don't know any. Also loved the name of the months in Finnish. Came upon your blog only two weeks ago, and like it.

Hehe-- no, not a rat! (thank goodness!!) i was trying to make a moomin reference (keeping with the theme). in the american edition of "moominland midwinter", there is a character called "the dweller under the sink". also, the too-ticky character talks often about "winter people". when you wrote "there will probably be a different kind of winter person later on" i thought you were referencing that! i guess it was just a funny coincidence. oh, translation. :)
Luckily there are no rats under my sink, but, once, walking down a dark street on the Upper East Side a few years ago, I did glimpse a very overlarge rat (the size of a small cat!) crouched at the edge of a bush, unwrapping a candy bar with its teeth and paws. It looked very smart. It was a very New York moment.
It's American Thanksgiving tomorrow! Now winter really begins here~!
