my very long-term dream is to have a himmeli, a Finnish straw decoration thing (maybe in Sweden too). i got some straw, and was trying to make the basic form... i should get some instructions! i want to get this book. i was borrowing it in the summer, but didn't study any instructions... and actually a himmeli would be too fitting in this house. it would've been just perfect against our old light grey stone wall in the kitchen, hanging from almost 3 meters...
and more cookies! i got a recipe from tiny happy, a blog i have recently found. i don't know why this late, the name is cute and inviting and puhti has it in her blog list. anyway, very nice ones. i put sesame seeds instead of coconut and organic cream instead of condensed milk. and a non-gluten version (for my aunt) with buckwheat flour, buckwheat flakes and potato flour. they were wonderful!
a hat for a 1-year old. knitted with organic wool, first time, it is so, so soft, extremely wonderful. and it was exactly right size. i hope to see her wearing it soon... very nice party at our friends' yesterday. they are really good at making parties. with 3 kids, there are quite many parties! (now, when i checked at tiny happy to make the link, there was a similar hat!)
it's been a good and long Sunday.

ooo i found my way to noninoko a couple of weeks ago via your blog and fell in love with the himmeli book. i've been curious about himmeli for a long time-- one of my favorite songs is "superhimmeli" by kemialliset ystävät, and i tried to find himmeli pictures after that.
i wish i knew hiragana or katakana at least. oh sigh. i may get my friend aya to order the book for me in a few weeks.
the noninoko site in general was delightful, even though i couldn't read it. the 'hands' book looked wonderful too.

i just met an 11-year old girl yesterday who had started studying japanese. she could write horse in kanji too! (important word)

they are pure perfection for christmas decoration a very good variation on straw stars that are common here in germany. I have to practice too, i definetely want a huge one!
hehe, i didn't know "himmeli" could mean dumb...that's probably what the song is about...although they also have some pictures of himmeli in the album art so maybe not!

ah! horse in kanji, that's cute. :) i know a couple of characters from taking a bunch of japanese literature courses but it's a drop in the bucket. (i wonder what the equivalent to that phrase is in finnish?) i'm trying to start japanese classes next semester.
and yes, i was fast, but because i'm stuck home sick with a cold! :( well, it's an excuse to hang out on the internet looking at wonderful blogs and art and things...:)
Kaela, it's "a drop in the ocean"! not just bucket. and i remembered the word dim, himmeä in finnish, that can be used for a person (mostly for light). himmeli wouldn't have the meaning of dumb in any dictionary. the name of the song definitely doesn't make me think of the greatest super himmeli in the world... yes, they are very, very sweet boys. do you like other finnish bands of that scene?
"Wendy", the recipe is at tiny happy, i noticed that you can mix whatever in the dough. they are quite buttery though, i shouldn't be making them this often...

I don't know how a himmeli is supposed to look but in my eyes yours looks not just as practice. It's a beautiful simple decoration. I like the pieces of fabric there too.

for the record, you need to make many, many if this simple form, in different sizes maybe and... this practise of mine is nothing at all. but these can hang on the christmas tree. we're making all kinds of things to hang, and they are being stored on these branches.
and
i forgot to say another tiny happy -inspiration (she got the idea from somewhere else): sewing little fabric leaves on branches. it's just a start. but we had fun cutting those pieces of fabric.
